The Mahim police are stressed over four minor girls, including three sisters, who have been missing since October 2010. So far, the children have fled their home on three occasions. The police said disputes within the family led the children to run.

According to the police, the minors are residents of Nayanagar in Mahim. They are identified as Tejaswini Verma (12), Laxmi Verma (5), Gauri Verma (3) and Sanna Shaikh (7).

Tejaswini, Laxmi and Gauri are sisters while Sana is a friend and neighbour. Interestingly, the four children have fled as a group in an earlier instance too. The four girls have been missing since October 27, 2010. The Mahim police have registered a missing complaint. According to the police, the first time the girls fled was on September 14, 2010 but they were found after a week in Ghatkopar.

The second time around, they fled on September 20, 2010 and were tracked down after a week from Kurulwadi in Solapur. This is the first time that the police has been unsuccessful at tracking them down for this long.

During investigations, theu00a0 police were able to gather information about the mothers. Both mothers are widowed and re-married, but are estranged from their husbands. The mother of the three sisters is HIV positive, and is also said to have a drinking problem. The two would often physically abuse their daughters. Fed up, the kids decided to flee. Sana's mother, Reshma Shaikh, works in Mangaldas Market as a labourer while mother to the three Verma sisters sells bangles at Dadar.

"We have formed a special team to hunt the girls. Our team has visited Gonda, Balrampur, Lucknow, Jhansi, Bhusawal, Bhopal, Habibganj, Nasik, Pune and Solapur in an attempt to locate them. We are trying our best to find them," said Ram Desai, senior inspector at the Mahim police station. "Once we track them this time, we will send them to a children's home to ensure they have a better future," said Desai.
