Misuse of parking: Hotel body to ask police to spare pre-2005 eateries

The Restaurants and Hoteliers Association (RHA) is disappointed with the decision of the city police to cancel the licences of all hotels found using their parking space for business purposes.

RHA president Ganesh Shetty said the list of hotels which the police have prepared to take action on are old establishments and as the parking laws were implemented in 2005, these should not apply to them.

The police, after a survey of various hotels in the city and Pimpri, prepared a list of 23 hotels against which they will take action.

"They (city police) have listed even the oldest establishments, like Vishwa and Kalpana hotel near Saras Baug, for the cancellation of hotel licence," Shetty said. "Vishwa Hotel is 40 years old and come from an era when the laws of parking did not exist."

Shetty said he felt it would be illegal to penalise such establishments as have been around in the city over the past 30 to 40 years.

According to Shetty, RHA would never stop the police from taking action against hotels established after 2005 but which use the parking space for business purposes.

"The members of RHA are going to meet Commissioner of Police Meeran Borwankar on this issue and will request her to rethink the city police decision," Shetty said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Vishwas Pandhare said: "We will take action against those establishments which have submitted their building plan along with the reserved parking space and are found to be misusing the same."
