After MiD DAY reported on how Mumbai's first cycling track at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) was inaugurated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) last Sunday, despite work required on at multiple spots, MMRDA sources tell us that higher authorities have asked project officers to complete the work on a priority basis.

Speaking to SMD, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner SVR Srinivas said, "Work is pending at a few spots along the cycling track. We have asked the contractor and MMRDA officials to complete it immediately." MMRDA has also asked the contractor to fill potholes and give a smooth touch of concrete to the track.

The G-Block track has been constructed at a cost of Rs 6.5 crore. In the article published on Friday, MiD DAY had also highlighted how auto rickshaws, two-wheelers and four wheelers were parked on the track despite no-parking and cycling track signage.

When we spoke with a police official present at the site, he professed helplessness. "We know that the track has been thrown open to public and we have asked motorists to not park their vehicles here, but they haven't listened. We have asked traffic officials to look into the matter."

After the MiD DAY story, MMRDA has asked traffic police to impose fines and tow away vehicles parked on the track. "We have already told the estate department, which looks into the matter, to conduct rounds of the track and stop people from parking. With the help of traffic officials, we will also impose heavy fines and tow vehicles parked there," added Srinivas. MMRDA is planning to write letters to offices in G-Block to ensure no one parks their vehicles on the track.
