Modi can't endorse ghar wapsi till he gets Jashodaben home: Kamat

In an apparent dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders of right-wing outfits, Congress leader Gurudas Kamat said yesterday that the PM would endorse ‘ghar wapsi’ only after he brought his estranged wife, Jashodaben, home.

The former Union minister added that doing so would also help if the PM wanted to lead by example in offering women respect and dignity. Addressing a gathering of workers at a protest rally in the city yesterday, Kamat said Modi would endorse the ghar wapsi movement only when he gave Jashodaben her long-pending due.

He added that if Modi could offer first-time MP Smriti Irani a plum ministry and make Anandiben Patel Gujarat’s CM, then he should not have any problem with Jashodaben, whom he had declared as his wife in an election affidavit last year, getting her due.

When mid-day called Kamat, he confirmed these statements, but denied that he had any intention of humiliating the PM. “There is no reason for the media to misconstrue my statement. I merely said Modi should treat all women equally. And, Jashodaben is his legally-wedded wife, who deserves better treatment and facilities.”

Kamat said Modi should at least provide Jashodaben a vehicle to move around in. “She (Jashodaben) travels in public transport. Can she not get a car from her husband?” BJP leader and state finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said Kamat’s criticism was misleading. “These statements are not good for a democracy like ours. I pray that God grants Kamat some sense.”
