Modi offers assistance to avalanche-hit Afghanistan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani expressing condolence over deaths in avalanches in various parts of the country and offering any possible assistance in rescue and relief efforts

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani expressing condolence over deaths in avalanches in various parts of the country and offering any possible assistance in rescue and relief efforts.


Modi said in his letter that he had asked India's Ambassador in Afghanistan Amar Sinha to seek "your (Ghani's) guidance on assistance that might be required", according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.


"I was deeply saddened at the massive loss of lives in avalanches in different parts of Afghanistan. This tragedy touches us even more because of the special bonds of affection and friendship between the people of India and Afghanistan," Modi said.

"I extend the heartfelt condolences of the people of India to you, the bereaved families and communities and the people of Afghanistan. Please be assured that they are with us in our thoughts and prayers.

Modi said he has "great confidence" in Ghani's leadership and the "ability of the Afghan people to respond to this disaster". "We stand ready to help in any way you desire with rescue and relief and to help people rebuild their lives," he said.
