Mona on the upswing

As the year draws to an end, all that Mona Singh wants to do in 2011 is to slim down and fatten her bank balance. The actor who is now busy hosting a reality show spoke to CS about being slow and selective:

Slow and steady
I believe less is more, that's why I have restricted myself to only a few TV shows. Though I had a small role in 3 Idiots, I was happy to be associated with the project.

I want to work in entertaining, yet sensible films. After Jassi, I realised my forte lay in playing strong character roles and that applies to films too.

I am glad to be paired opposite Vinay Pathak in my upcoming film Utpatang. He's a fabulous actor and a gem of a person.u00a0

Striking a balance
I got plenty of offers after Jassi but nothing caught my fancy. It's hard to settle for something mediocre after a rocking debut like Jassi (smiles).

Yes, I have been hosting shows on TV but anchoring comes naturally to me. It's acting that truly gets me excited. I will only take up a daily soap if the role is extremely challenging.

But I don't believe in saying that I am quitting television for films. Come on, all the top Bollywood actors are seen on TV today. I want to strike the perfect balance.u00a0

TV, aaj kal
Though I don't get much time, I do watch some of the shows on TV. Five years back, actors like Smriti Irani, Shweta Tiwari, Rohit Roy, Ronit Roy or Rajeev Khandelwal enjoyed a different kind of popularity. That's not the case with today's actors. There are too many shows and too many actors.

It's like a rat race. So, once these people get out of sight, they are out of mind. You can't miss the herd mentality on television.

If a rural based show does well, 20 other shows come up with a similar storyline. I guess one of the reasons I don't get exciting work is because I don't look like a 'gaonwali' (laughs out loud).

Looking forward to 2011
My biggest wish for 2011 is to slim down. Simultaneously, I want to fatten up my bank balance. The two shouldn't be mixed (laughs).

I just got myself another flat at Lokhandwala, and I am doing up the interiors. So, I plan to shift to a new home in 2011. As far as marriage is concerned, that cannot be planned. It will happen when it has to happen.
