Monkey rescued from abuse, handler held at Juhu beach

A monkey was rescued from the clutches of its handler at Juhu beach recently, after visitors to the beach found the man torturing the animal.

An FIR has been filed against the handler at Santacruz police station under the Wildlife Protection Act. The monkey is now in rehabilitation  at the Katraj facility at Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Pune, the police said.

On November 20, around 9 pm, a team of police officers and animal right activists conducted a raid at Juhu Chowpatty. They had received several complaints of the monkey being tortured.

The activists said monkeys are usually captured from the wild by agents and kept in a dark room for two-three days, as is the usual practice. Then, the handler, in order to gain the monkey’s trust, frees them from the cage and feeds them.
But, as soon as they gain the trust of the monkey, they beat and abuse the animal to teach it tricks.

"We often see that Juhu beach has several such monkeys and their handlers. We give them money to entertain us with their tricks, but this is violation of animal rights. They are tortured into learning the tricks,” said Nirali Kodaria, an animal rights activist working with People for Animals, an NGO that operates under the supervision of Maneka Gandhi, Union Minister for Women and Child Development.

"Maneka Gandhi, too, has been forwarding us emails that she receives about animals being tortured. Wild animals are not meant to be in cages or homes for our entertainment," Kodaria added, while speaking to mid-day.
