ON Day 2 of the MiD DAY campaign to identify monsoon-related problems and fix them in association with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the busy Gunjan Talkies traffic signal that you have to pass on the way to the airport was surveyed. Water-logging was found to be a big monsoon-related problem in the vicinity of the signal, both on the road going left from the signal and leading to the Lohegaon airport past the Gunjan talkies, and the one that goes straight past the signal on to Viman Nagar. During rush hour, it is bumper-to-bumper traffic on these roads, and water-logging compounds the problem.

Survey results and proposed solutions

In front of Sargam Hotel
Problem:u00a0 Right in front of the hotel gates, there is an open drain filled with debris. When it rains, water accumulates on the road because of the choked drain and the hotel gate being at some height from the road. Hotel manager Naidu said, "There is stagnant water in front of our gate as it can not flow away." The offending drain was not covered and had plastic packets and paper clogging its mouth. The Sangamwadi ward office is bang opposite this point.

PMC's promise: N L Karale, PMC executive engineer, inspected the open drain and immediately called officials from the ward office. S N Pagare, assistant engineer at the ward office, said, "We will start work on this storm water drain in 72 hours and will complete it in eight days."

Stretch where road turns for Gunjan Talkies and airport
Problem: The edge of the road turning left to Gunjan Talkies was not done properly. The tarred road did not extend to the edge, and the footpath also was not properly done, leaving an undulating surface. When it rains, the uneven surface of the road can not be seen because of water-logging, and vehicles or pedestrians run the risk of losing their balance.

PMC's promise: The PMC promised to start work on levelling theu00a0 road with tar or concrete and the footpath with slabs all along the curve. The PMC said it will begin the work in three days and complete it in eight days.

In front of Gunjan talkies
Problem: The road slopes down towards Gunjan talkies. When it rains, water flows down the slope and accumulates in front of Gunjan talkies. A drain here had its cover half-open. People said water gushes out of the drain instead of going down it, adding to the water-logging problem. To the left of the talkies gate is a pipe carrying drinking water, but it was found leaking. The pipe was filled with garbage.

PMC's promise: N L Karale, PMC executive engineer, Pravin Gedam, executive engineer (road department) and N N Barapatre, superintendent engineer, inspected the spot. Karale said, "The storm water drain is along the road. During the Youth Commonwealth Games, these water lines were laid. We will fix the drain cover and level the footpath too."
