Everyone present at the Kingsmead yesterday was surprised to see South Africa paceman Morne Morkel, who injured his ankle in the previous Test in Johannesburg, not only turn up for practice but also engage in a game of football

Thereafter, he could be seen bowling to the South African batsmen. He is extremely keen to play the second and final Test and insisted he would be fit for the game which begins on Boxing Day. His hunger to be part of the XI also arises from the fact that Graeme Smith & Co are not scheduled to play any Test early in the new year.

Smith however adopted a cautious approach, saying a final call on Morkel would be taken just before the game. “One thing is sure. He is very keen to play the match. The only problem is if he breaks down, we will be left with a bowler short. This is a situation we don’t want to find ourselves in. That’s why we are yet to take a final decision,” Smith explained.

Meanwhile, India’s Ravindra Jadeja too enjoyed a long stint at the nets, giving rise to speculation that he could feature in the Indian playing XI here.u00a0
