Movie Review: Race 2

Okay, picture this: a serious game of Flush is on. With the help of some mind-numbing nanochip-body heat technology, Eleena (Deepika Padukone), who is accompanying half-brother casino kingpin Armaan Malik (John Abraham), is able to read the cards of their opponents, redo their sequences on her smartphone and CHANGE her half-brother’s cards, with the help of similar body-heat technology, and help him win the round.

All because super-duper billionaire Armaan Malik hates to lose, even at the cost of doing such underhand chhindi chor stuff. Of course, the opponents who play with him every Saturday never ever realise that they have been had.

There are other impressive inventions in this film: a car that flies in the air and lands with the help of four parachutes exactly like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

There is a fancy ring with which Malik taps his beloved wallet chor girlfriend Omeesha’s (Jacqueline Fernandez) chats with everybody. There is also a CCTV network in Malik’s offices that taps his own incriminating conversations. A pair of dark glasses that help people read thumbprints to guess passwords to high security areas. However, the most impressive invention of the film is its plot. Wah, in its sheer inventiveness to defeat simple common sense, the Race 2 plot is totally epic.

The film revolves around the aforementioned Armaan Malik and Eleena and Tanya, conman Ranveer Singh (Saif Ali Khan), cop-turned-club owner RD (Anil Kapoor) and his bimbette secretary Cherry (Ameesha Patel). Everyone in this group, bar a couple, is suspicious of and is lying, cheating and double-crossing everyone else. And surprisingly, everyone in the group is aware of who is cheating whom. Still, strangely they all continue to do high-stakes business with each other. There is even Godfather Anza (Aditya Pancholi with hair) who, if you double cross, can send you to God to meet your father!
Even for a masala entertainer, the Burmawala Bros have stretched things too far.

The film is based in Turkey, but that’s just a flimsy technicality. Where this group operates, there are no laws or law-enforcing agencies. You could drive on the wrong side of the road at killer speed all through the city and not have a single police car track you down. Or a hitman could blast a car in a market and a big chase would follow but still no police car. You could shoot a man in the middle of a crowded discotheque, make him crumple down and people would just keep dancing. You can kill someone in a fighting ring and people would just cheer you.

Performances, phew, the film has more close-ups of cars than faces, so the lesser said the better. Fancy cars whiz past on high speed, alpha men charge and swagger ahead of exploding cars in slow-motion, men and women show off their sculpted bodies while coming out of the sea, or women in bold, bright red lipstick and nailpaint dressed for the ramp, even in a bedroom romp, and everyone talks about some billion-trillion-gazillion Euros worth of deals in vain - Race 2 is a bimbo film, all horsepower, no brainpower.
