The VIBGYOR squad
VIBGYOR led 6-3 in the first quarter and by half time they were up 14-3. In the third and fourth quarters, the Andheri school tried to reduce the deficit, scoring six points in each quarter, but VIBGYOR held on to triumph.
Anushka thanked her coach Nelson Fernandes for giving her a chance to play in the school’s ‘A’ team this year. “Last year I was in the ‘B’ team and always wished to play for the ‘A’ team. This year, Nelson sir selected me. I am glad that I scored in the final and didn’t let him down. Winning the title was an added bonus,” said 10-year-old.
Megan, who was a part of the team that won the title last season, said: “Danika Pereira is the main player for Divine Child. We ensured she was marked properly and hence we won.” Meanwhile, VIBGYOR High coach Nelson said: “In this age group, one can’t predict anything. This year, I wasn’t sure if we could win as Divine Child is a very good side. Today they did miss a couple of chances or else they could have beaten us.”
In the Boys U-11 final, Don Bosco (Matunga) defended their title in style with a 22-12 win over PG Garodia School (Ghatkopar). Umang Shah scored 15 points for the Matunga school, while Anurag Pandey supported him by scoring seven points. Prateek Neema scored six points for the Ghatkopar team.
