Representatives of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) feel they have struck gold
Following widely encouraging response from foreign nationals travelling by Deccan Odyssey to the event involving traditional adventure games held at Royal Palace in Kolhapur, MTDC is all set to organise a similar programme at Panhala to attract visitors. The event will be held for three days in October, and the corporation intends to make this a regular affair if the feedback is good.

“MTDC is arranging such events for the first time, and the motive behind this is to support these traditional games, which are on the verge of extinction. We also shared a very good experience with travellers on Deccan Odyssey, who liked the special programme we organised for them. Therefore, we have decided apply the same formula to attract tourists from various parts of Maharashtra and other states too,” said Shrikant Javkhedkar, administrative head of MTDC Pune division.

“Presently we are doing a survey to locate such groups that have preserved these sports. In Kolhapur, Satara and Sangli there are such people in good number, unlike Pune,” said Javkhedkar. u00a0

The directorate of sports and youth services has also come forward and assured help to officials of MTDC in making the upcoming event a success. “I would try to find such groups that have upheld folk adventure games within the district (Pune) itself. I know a few units in Akola and Amravati district that perform Mallakhamb in water. So it would be a mesmerising experience for the tourists, and would also encourage the performers and others like them,” said assistant joint director from the directorate Manik Thosare. u00a0
