Much Tweet about nothing

A recent survey conducted in the US found that more than 40 per cent of tweets on Twitter are pointless babble. MiD DAY asks Indians if we think so too

This might be the benefit of a service like Twitter to some, but a woe to many others. Is Twitter the new Facebook with an equal number of lovers and haters, or is the research telling us something we already know?

"Tweets in most cases are pure babble as many people just update mundane things like 'I woke up' and 'I am eating breakfast.' But for regular users, twitter is a very informative tool and in fact it is the only real time news source," says Shivani Ramaiah, social media professional. "Even Google," she goes on to say, "takes time to give out news." She cites the Taj attack as an example where it was widely reported that Twitter was the first source of information for many people. "In Twitter, you tweet and its there for the world. While on Google someone sees the news and multiple people report and finally depending on the number of visitors for a particular topic, the news pops up on the front page."

The best tracker
Stacy Kerzner, a publisher, says "Twitter has its benefits even though most people tend to use the service like they would use Facebook. But there are also possibilities of using the site as a knowledge resource. My twitter page TrendyIn keeps track of anything and everything lifestyle in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore." "We value our readers time and hence choose our words very carefully," she adds.u00a0

Better than Facebook
Navdha Dhingra thinks otherwise. A client service representative at McCann Erickson, she says, "Tweets at times are pointless but otherwise it's information we'd love to read. It is an extremely fast and easy way to know what is happening in the world." "Whatever anyone might say, it's at least more friendly than Facebook's million irritating applications," she adds.
