A media professional allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of an oncoming local train at Lower Parel station late on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Nitin Shirke, who worked as a sound engineer with Marathi news channel IBN Lokmat.

An official from the stationmaster’s office at Lower Parel station said, "Around 10.30 pm, Shirke was run over by a local arriving at platform number one. The motorman told us that when the train was some 15 feet away, the deceased suddenly came in front of it; he died on the spot after his body was sliced in two. It’s difficult to say whether it was a suicide or an attempt to cross the track."

Shirke’s body has been taken to Nair Hospital for a post-mortem.

The police said the deceased had posted a message on Facebook, giving the names of a female colleague and a man who, he wrote, should be held responsible for his death. Further investigation is on, a police official said.

GRP DCP Purushottam Karad said, "We have registered an accidental death report and are scanning CCTV footage at the station. We will probe the case from all possible angles."
