Two days after a complaint was registered against two MNS corporators for publicly humiliating a chief engineer with the BMC, the Shivaji Park police station arrested them on Saturday evening, after they surrendered. They have been remanded in judicial custody till Monday.
MNS supporters gather at the Shivaji Park police station
On October 5, MNS party workers, along with corporators Sandeep Deshpande and Santosh Dhuri, took Chief Engineer of the Road Department Sanjay Darade to inspect roads near Sena Bhavan in Dadar. They allegedly forced Darade to hold a placard saying ‘I am responsible for all the potholes in Mumbai’.
The next day, more than 4,200 civic engineers struck work, demanding stern action against Deshpande and Dhuri. The strike was called off after an FIR was registered against both corporators.
At 4.30 pm on Saturday, both corporators surrendered at Shivaji Park police station, and refused bail. Hundreds of MNS party workers gathered at the police station shouting slogans against the engineers. “As both refused bail, we took them to the night court at Haji Ali, which has sent them to judicial custody,” said Senior Inspector of Shivaji Park Police station Gangadhar Sonawane.
About the corporators
Sandeep Deshpande and Santosh Dhuri are both first-time corporators from the Dadar area, which is a Shiv Sena bastion. Deshpande is the group leader of MNS in the BMC and has been in the news in the past for various protests.
