This weekend, all the action takes place between Colaba and Bandra as eight galleries come together to host a three-day art event
On Friday evening, if you drop in at Sakshi Gallery on Arthur Bunder Road in Colaba, you will find Princess Pea, an anonymous artist wearing a pea-shaped head, unveiling photographs of her debut solo in the city, Sunrise Ceremonies. Further down the lane, you’ll be greeted by a collaborative art show at Lakeeren Art Gallery. Located a stone’s throw from here is Chatterjee & Lal, which mounts Kausik Mukhopadhyay’s new solo, Squeeze Lime In Your Eye. The three galleries are part of the eight that have come together to host the sixth edition of Mumbai Gallery Weekend (MGW).

Launched in 2012 by some of the city’s leading contemporary art galleries, the initiative aims to engage not only existing but also potential collectors and art enthusiasts. The three-day event will be packed with previews of opening exhibitions, lectures, panel discussions and walkthroughs.
While Project 88, Gallery Chemould and Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke have participated earlier too, the two additions this year are Tarq and Akara Art. Guests can also check out collateral exhibitions and events scheduled at venues from Colaba to Bandra. These include a walkthrough of the Suitcase Museum by photographer Dayanita Singh at Dr Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum in Byculla and a panel discussion on the future of design thinking at Max Mueller Bhavan. The panelists include Nancy Adajania Hoskote and Anita Lal.
The event wraps up with the launch of Here, There & Everywhere, an artistic collaboration between India and the UK on Sunday. The programme, featuring exhibitions, projects and residencies, launches in Mumbai and culminates in March 2018.
Venues ‘here’ (UK), ‘there’ (India), and ‘everywhere’ (across multiple sites and online), coincide with the 70th anniversary of India’s independence as well as the Partition of India and Pakistan. Through a series of exhibitions, projects and residencies, it explores what autonomy really means. It’s a project by a consortium of Midlands-London organisations led by New Art Exchange in collaboration with What About Art?, Bandra’s non-profit art residency, .
