mid-day had reported how the thief — identified as Malwani resident Uday Patil — was thwarted in the ATM robbery by a citizen who was up for morning prayers for Ramzan (‘Man wakes up for sehri, stops ATM robbery’, June 15). The alert citizen, Fazal Sayyed, will soon be felicitated with a bravery award.

It turns out, the accused had several cases of house-breaking lodged against him. The 28-year-old managed to evade the police’s ire by playing on their sympathy. Due to a medical condition, Patil wears a urine bag on his body and cops assumed he was very ill.

On July 9, he was arrested for breaking into the Camuna co-operative bank situated at Ashok Raj society in Goregaon west. With the help of CCTV footage and his mobile location, the Goregaon police arrested him at his house in Malwani and also recovered 5 laptops and a mobile phone he had stolen from the bank.

He also confessed to the robbery attempt at the ATM. “He carried out many robberies, all in the hope of pleasing his eunuch partner,” said an officer from Manikpur police, who took Patil’s custody yesterday.
