A day after auto rickshaw and taxi unions protested against the transport authorities for taking severe action, the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) blamed errant auto rickshaws and taxis for parking haphazardly and not allowing smooth flow of traffic.

In fact, the undertaking, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and the Traffic police have decided to join hands to weed out this problem this month. BEST authorities have identified four locations Bandra (East), Andheri (West), Kurla (East) and Kurla (West) where there is maximum space crunch for bus movement.

All the spots are close to the railway stations, where auto rickshaws and taxis crowd the arterial roads and leave no space for buses to turn or move around. “I visited Bandra (East), where I saw these auto rickshaws blocking the road completely.

We will soon start a drive along with the Traffic police and BMC to remove all hurdles,” said J Patil, general manager, BEST. The depot at Bandra (East) is 2 km away from Bandra terminus. Those wishing to reach the terminus are seen walking on the congested road with their luggage or getting into shared auto rickshaws from Bandra station.

The civic body’s role in this team would be to clear hurdles like incorrectly designed roads or excessively wide footpaths, if they are seen to hinder movement of buses. BMC will also remove shops and other obstacles in the bus’ path. The Traffic department shall ensure these taxis and auto rickshaws follow rules and do not block the road for other vehicles.
