The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) which for three years recovered its transport losses through its electricity bills; are themselves unable to recover dues.
The last 10 years – till year 2013 – the undertaking has suffered irrecoverable bad debts amounting to Rs 1,068 crore.
Unpaid dues of individuals, private companies and even government agencies like Home department, Police department, BMC has led to loss of public revenue. Sources in the BEST informed that they will take action against individuals but it will be difficult when it comes to inter-government agencies.
"There is a need for having a separate cell for recovering these losses," said Kedar Hombalkar, BEST committee member.
Apart from unpaid dues, there are few bad electricity meters that are generating very low bill amount over the last several months now.
Over the last three years, the BEST has recovered Rs 1,700 crore as Transport Deficit Losses Recovery (TDLR). Around 10 lakh power consumers of BEST have paid for the losses through their electricity bills of Transport division.
