Mumbai: BMC to send show-cause notice to Bhau Daji Lad museum trust

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday announced its decision to send a show-cause notice to Bhau Daji Lad museum’s management headed by director Tasneem Mehta. The civic body will also be looking at ways to terminate the contract with the management by way of legal opinion.

Civic authorities had announced a few months ago that they are looking to regain greater control of the museum. As the next step towards it, municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta on Thursday made a presentation before the leaders of all political parties in the BMC. During the meeting, the announcement was made.

The BMC has stated that the museum under Tasneem Mehta has faced several irregularities.

They have stated that the certification of artifacts in the museum was not done, accounts were not submitted, audit was not conducted, day-to-day revenue accounts were not submitted and inventory was not made etc.

Therefore, a show cause notice will be sent to the museum director in the matter and the BMC will take help of senior counsels in order to terminate the agreement.

“It can be definitely said that there were financial irregularities. None of the accounts were submitted for scrutiny. We have now suggested the BMC that new criterion must be drawn up for running the museum and fresh contracts should be allotted. We will take the best legal advice to see that her contract is terminated,” said Sandip Deshpande, MNS group leader in the BMC. He added that the BMC will cut off funding to the museum and any events to be conducted will need prior sanction of the BMC.
