Mumbai Builders remain on shaky ground over strike

Will they, or won’t they? That’s the question troubling builders after their lobby announced that it would go on a strike on May 3 at Azad Maidan. The pending strike has builders confused becvasue they don’t know if the strike will be carried out, or if it has been called off. Builders associated with the Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry (MCHI) had planned a strike of more than 50,000 members to protest the government’s ‘over-regulation’ on the real estate industry.

On April 30, the builders were to announce their strike formally but postponed the announcement pending their meeting with Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to discuss the issue. Paras Gundecha, president, MCHI said, “We will take a final call on the strike only after meeting the CM. We are meeting him on Tuesday at 4 pm. We are expecting a fruitful conversation with him about our problems. The outcome of the meeting will decide about the strike.”

New appointment
Meanwhile, Sitaram Kunte was appointed as the city’s new municipal commissioner. Kunte, who was earlier the principal secretary of the housing committee will now head the BMC. The news of Kunte’s appointment brought a smile to the faces of the builders. Reacting to Kunte’s appointment, Gundecha said, “We expect a lot of positive changes, now that Kunte has taken over. We hope for better things to come.”

Another builder associated with MCHI, added that the builders had almost called off the strike. “Things are now in our stride. The CM has also agreed to give us an audience. We are sure that things will change now and proposals will get passed and the real estate industry will see a growth.”u00a0
