Mumbai: Celebs set to get dirty to clean up Versova beach

In yet another attempt to clean up the Versova beach, residents and celebrities are rallying together and on August 6 and 7, will go on a clean-up drive. Noted names like Pooja Bhatt, Irfan Khan and Deepak Dobriyal will join forces with UN delegates — Eric Solheim, chief of UN environment program, and Lewis Pugh, the Patron of Ocean, UN — to aid the running campaign by the Versova Residents Volunteer team along with its founder Afroz Shah.

Speaking to mid-day, Bhatt said, “I was walking down my building the other day and sanitary pads were just lying around. I didn’t ask anyone to pick it up; I just went ahead and did it myself. We like to talk about things, but not stand up and do it. There is an urgent need to have apathy towards our surroundings.”

Talking about the need to shift mindsets as well, she added, “Whenever there is a rape, we know the root cause is not provocative clothes but the mindset. Similarly, we need to realize that there is a need for us as Mumbaikars to change our mindset about surroundings. The BMC should now either take charge or let the citizens take the lead.”

Citizens’ initiative
The movement to clean up the Versova beach started on October 25 last year and is now in its 42nd week. Talking about it, Shah said, “This is a huge honour for all of us. From the time the movement started till now, it has been the combined effort of all the residents. We intend to continue this till all the beaches and oceans are clean. Next, we plan to take up Aqsa beach and Dadar chowpatty.”
