Mumbai: College principal and staff assault student's kin for cancelling admission

The principal and staff of a Borivli college allegedly assaulted the father and relative of a 16-year-old student for cancelling admission, and refusing to pay the hefty charge for return of her documents. Her father and cousin have alleged that the police, instead of bringing the culprits to book, registered a complaint against them.

Bhayandar-based Harsha Madiwal on Monday visited Namdar Ajit Pawar Junior College in Borivli West to secure admission, after she found her name in the second merit list on July 12. Harsha’s father Ramesh Madiwal (48) and her cousin Ramesh Madal (22) accompanied her.

According to Madal, the clerk, Arvind Gaikwad, said that for her admission they need to pay fees of Rs 12,000 and also Rs 1.5 lakh for coaching classes, which would be taken care of by the college itself.

Madal refused to pay for the coaching class and approached Principal Prashant Gaikwad, (28), who also told them that they needed to pay if they wanted admission for Harsha.

When the Madiwals decided not to take admission in the college, he directed them to Gaikwad. Madiwal demanded his daughter’s documents back, to which Gaikwad allegedly told them to shell out Rs 500 to get them back. When Madiwal refused to pay the R500 claiming the admission cancellation and return of documents fee is just R50, a heated argument ensued.

Madal claims when he tried to record the argument, the principal’s brother, snatched his mobile and slapped him. Then the clerk and principal’s brother started assaulting them. The Madiwals claim the principal arrived with 4-5 staff and also started assaulting them and Madal. “The principal and his staff took us to the MHB police station, beating me throughout and tore my clothes. They made false allegations against me,” said Madal.

“The police lodged a complaint against us on the college staff’s complaint,” Madal said, adding, “Instead of registering an assault and rioting case, they just lodged an NC against them on our complaint.”

Senior Inspector of the MHB police station, Arun Satpute said, “The Madiwals met me on Monday and they did not make any such complaint against the police. ”

Borivli division ACP Sudhakar Pujari told mid-day that he has no knowledge of any such complaint.

The principal remained unavailable for comment.
