Vrishabh Mali was a 2009 batch police constable attached with the Goregaon police station. Mali lived in Chahade village, Palghar. He would ride his bike daily to Palghar railway station from home, after which he’d take the local train to work.

On Monday, at around 8.30 pm, while heading back home from Palghar station, Mali’s two-wheeler was hit by a heavy vehicle at Naroda on Manor Road. Mali was thrown off the bike and he sustained multiple injuries to his body, including his head. The driver, who dashed Mali, escaped from the scene.

He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but was declared dead on arrival, a source from the Manor police said. His body was later sent to the City Hospital in Palghar for a post-mortem. Mali is survived by his wife, two-year old daughter and parents.

The Palghar police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence, rash and dangerous driving against the driver of the unknown vehicle, under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. They are currently investigating the case.

Mali’s colleagues at the Goragaon police station believe that if he had worn his helmet, he could have been saved.

Only recently, commissioner of police Datta Padsalgikar had asked the police force to strictly follow traffic rules, including wearing a helmet while riding the bike. The commissioner had warned of stern action if any cop was found flouting traffic rules. Following the police chief’s order, the city traffic police had even penalised many cops during naka bandis.
