Mumbai cops nab four in robbery case

Mumbai police today claimed to have busted a robber's gang, which targeted jewellery dealers in the city, by arresting four persons, including an alleged member of Abu Salem gang.

Mumbai police today claimed to have busted a robber's gang, which targeted jewellery dealers in the city, by arresting four persons, including an alleged member of Abu Salem gang.


The accused identified as Vinod Jhagda (39), Kherul Kadvi (27), Karan Vishwakarma (22) and Mohammed Akbar (32) were nabbed yesterday, police said, adding that they were remanded to police custody till May 18.


The accused were involved in three robbery cases reported on April 13, 23 and 25 at suburban Borivli and Dahisar, Joint Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria said.


"They kept a watch on the dealers and accordingly targetted them. They shot at the victims before snatching gold ornaments," Maria said, adding that the accused have criminal background and they were wanted in several other cases including robbery, attempt to murder, among others.

While Jhagda, Kadvi and Vishwakarma were trapped at Borivli, Akbar was arrested from Powai, Maria said. "Jhagda is a jeweller who was convicted in a murder case and he was in jail for sometime when he met other accused, including Kadvi who is a member of Abu Salem gang," Maria said.

"Kadvi was involved in the case of firing at producer Manmohan Shetty at MIDC in 2001," he said. Police recovered 27 bangles worth Rs 6.50 lakh and cash Rs 1.53 lakh from the accused.
