Mumbai: Cops rain on dahi handi after-party

Taking strict action against those who defied the SC’s order on height restriction for human pyramids during Gokulashtami, the Mumbai and Thane police on Thursday registered five cases against dahi handi organisers and govinda pathaks. Of these cases, four were against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists from the Kalachowki area.

The SC had recently passed an order stating that the height of human pyramids during dahi handi celebrations should not exceed 20 feet and that govindas under 18 years of age, should not be part of the human pyramids. However, many govinda mandals and the MNS had opposed the order. MNS went a step ahead and brazenly defied the SC’s order in Thane and Mumbai. Thane’s Naupada police have already registered a case against MNS activists. Late on Thursday night, the Mumbai police also registered four offences against MNS activists.

The MNS had organised a dahi handi in Shahid Bhagat Singh ground in Abhyuday Nagar in Kalachowki, where the handi was above 20 feet. The Kalachowki police booked four different govinda pathaks, identified as Azad Govinda Pathak (Sewri), Gurudatta Govinda Pathak, (Sion), Ashtavinayak Govinda Pathak (Wadala) and Bauncha Maruti Sewak Mandal (Sewri), in these cases. The Sewri pathak was also booked for allowing a minor govinda to participate in one of the human pyramids.

City police have also booked govindas of Golden Krida Mandal. Mumbai police spokesperson DCP Ashok Dudhe on Friday morning said, “We have registered total 20 offenses till now regarding the violation of (Supreme) court's order.”
