A day after mid-day’s report about the BMC razing three shanties in Andheri (East), forcing a policeman’s son to study for his Master’s exams amid the ruins of his home, the civic body gave the three families possession letters and keys of flats in Andheri (West) yesterday.

While the cop said he was grateful to mid-day for helping him and the other families get the flats, he said he would be filing a case against cops from the Andheri police station and the BMC for the way they carried out the demolition.

mid-day had reported on Monday how the BMC had razed three shanties in Manjrekar Wadi on N S Phadke Road (near Bisleri Junction) in Andheri (East) on November 29, forcing the families of Sahar police station’s Head Constable Vidyadhar Jadhav, his brother Santosh and one Anil Parab to live on the road since then.
The BMC had taken the action, meant to help widen the road, despite the matter being in court and without allotting other flats to the affected families. Jadhav’s son, Vikas, whose Master of Computer Appli-cation exams are on, has been studying under streetlights since then, trying to cope both with the loss of his house and the dozens of mosquitoes around him. After the family moves into the new flat, he can finally study indoors again.
U-Turn
BMC officials called Jadhav and members of the other families yesterday and gave them possession letters and keys to three flats in Andheri (West) that they had been shown, and had liked, earlier. Jadhav said the officers, who had taken his home away and been rude to him so far, also asked if he needed help in shifting and cleaning the house.
Jadhav, however, refused saying he would do all that after the court hearing, which is slated for today (Wednesday) “I am very happy and satisfied with the flat and thankful to mid-day for helping me get it. I will attend the court hearing on Wednesday and then proceed to my new house, where my family and I will conduct a Ganesh pooja,” said Jadhav.
The head constable, however, added that he was still seething from the way the BMC and Andheri police officials had acted and at the injustice meted out to him and his family. “Everything could have been done properly. The BMC could have allotted us the flats earlier, waited for the court hearing and demolished the shanties after we got a chance to remove our belongings.
My family and I have suffered enormous mental pressure and torture. Only we know how we stayed on the road for so many nights,” Jadhav said. “I will be filing a case against the BMC and the cops who did this to me. I’m still surprised that the police officers did not help me even though I’ve been a policeman for 25 years,” he added.
