A senior citizen lost 18 tolas of gold jewellery and Rs 50,000 in cash when his house in Dahisar East was burgled on Monday.

Ranganath Khavale (66), a resident of Varad Vinayak building in the area, stepped out around noon to visit a bank and deposit a cheque he had received from a tenant. His wife left home at the same time to visit their daughter in the neighbourhood.

When she returned at 2 pm, she found that the house had been broken into, and gold jewels and Rs 50,000 kept in a cupboard stolen. She called Khavale, who approached the police.

A Dahisar police officer said an FIR against unknown person(s) was registered under sections 454 (house break-in to commit an offence) and 380 (theft in a dwelling house) of the IPC.
