As three bike-borne robbers struggled and scuffled with the two victims on a motorcycle, trying to wrest from them the bag containing cash, two alert traffic constables on patrol duty arrived in the nick of time. And even though they could only arrest one of them from the spot, as the other two escaped, the police later managed to nab them as well within a few hours.
The three on a motorcycle overtake Tambe and Bait and one of them tries to snatch the bag containing cash from Bait’s hands
The incident happened on Rawalpada bridge near Dahisar. Dattaram Tambe (34), a resident of Thakur Village in Kandivli east and an employee of Sankalp Entertainment Pvt. Ltd, was on his way to company manager Manish Gilani’s residence in Goregaon east to hand over Rs 8.63 lakh that he had taken from the cashier at Coca Cola godown in Kajupada, Thane.
As they all struggle and scuffle, both bikes skid and they all fall down. While the two pillion riders manage to escape, the rider, with his leg stuck in Tambe’s bike, is unable to
Tambe was riding with colleague Mahendra Bait, when around 11.20 pm, as they reached the bridge, three men on a bike overtook them and one of them tried to snatch the cash bag from Bait’s hands. A scuffle erupted and both bikes skidded and they all fell down.
Traffic constables Sachin Avghade and Pritam Thakur, who arrive on the scene, nab the stuck biker and hand him over to the Dahisar police
The two robbers who were riding pillion threw chilli powder on Tambe and Bait’s faces and fled with the bag, but the one riding the bike couldn’t escape as his leg had got stuck in the wheel of Tambe’s motorcycle.
Traffic constables Sachin Avghadeand Pritam Thakur nabbed one of the accused Vinayak Yadav during the highway robbery
That’s when traffic constables Sachin Avghade and Pritam Thakur arrived on the scene. “Initially, we thought that it was an accident. Then, we spotted two running away with a bag, and hence, rushed to the spot,” Avghade said.
Accused Vinayak Yadav
Avghade and Thakur tried to chase the robbers but failed to catch them. They then nabbed the one stuck in the bike, identified as Vinayak Yadav (21), and handed him over to the Dahisar police.
The Dahisar police later arrested three more accused — Javed Salim Sheikh (22), Rajesh Anil Pannikar (31) and Sunny Gupta, one of them, according to officers, being the tipper who had informed the other three about the cash being transported. One of them is also suspected to be a former employee of the company.
Senior Inspector Subhash Sawant said, “We have arrested the accused under sections 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigation is on.”
