Officials from Kashimira police station arrested Noor Ismail Jubbar Sheikh from a dargah in Andheri after tracing his cellphone location and rescued the two-year-old. Sheikh is a resident of Poonam building at Yari Road in Andheri (West).

Police said the accused and the boy’s father have been best friends since childhood and work for the same company. “Sheikh would regularly visit his best friend’s residence in Mira Road, as he was smitten by his wife.

A few days ago, Sheikh visited his friend’s home, in his absence, and proposed the woman for marriage. He asked the 27-year-old to divorce her husband. The woman rejected his proposal and even slapped him.

The next day, Sheikh apologised for his behaviour,” informed a police official. Senior Inspector Anil Kadam from Kashimira police station said on Tuesday, Sheikh again visited his friend’s residence, in his absence.

“The woman was at home with her two children, when Sheikh took the boy along on the pretext of showing him Ganpatis in the area. A few hours later, he called the woman and told her that her son has been kidnapped.

Sheikh told her that he would kill the boy if she refused to marry him. He asked her to divorce her husband immediately so that he could start the preparations for their wedding,” said Kadam.

The woman immediately approached the police for help and registered a case of kidnapping against Sheikh. While they were unable to trace his whereabouts on Tuesday, the police managed to zero in on his location on Wednesday. They nabbed him from Versova Dargah and rescued the toddler.

“We handed over the boy back to his mother,” Kadam said. Shocked by his best friend’s behaviour, the boy’s father said, “Sheikh has been my best friend since childhood and would visit us regularly. The incident has shaken me to the core.

I can’t imagine that a best friend can do such a thing.” Sheikh was booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 363 (kidnapping). He was produced in a local court in Thane yesterday and has been remanded in police custody till Sunday.
