In yet another assault on a minor, a five-year-old from Jogeshwari was raped and left to fend for herself in the Aarey Colony jungle. The perpetrator has not been identified and is still at large.

Around 8 pm on July 5, the young girl’s grandmother had asked her to buy paan from a nearby shop. When she didn’t return home, her parents called up the police control room and alerted officials about their missing daughter.

“We launched a search party and found her in the middle of the jungle around 7.30 the next morning. Her clothes were missing and her body bore injury marks,” said an inspector from Meghwadi police station. The survivor was taken to the Jogeshwari Trauma centre and later shifted to KEM hospital in Parel.

A doctor from KEM said that the little girl had sustained injuries on her private parts and she had to undergo a surgery on July 6, the day she was admitted.

“When she was admitted, she was visibly traumatised and was crying a lot. She is now in the paediatrics ward and her condition is stable. She will be discharged shortly,” said the doctor. Sources from the hospital said the girl is being guarded by a police officer.

A case has been registered with the Meghwadi police station under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 376 (rape) and 377 (unnatural offences) of the Indian Penal Code. “We have also filed a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act, 2012.

The man is yet to be identified,” said the inspector, adding that efforts to find the girl’s clothes, which could give clues about the rapist, have yielded no results.
