No good deed goes unpunished and neither does it absolve a history of crime. This is what serial burglar Amit Ratul Das, who moonlighted as Robin Hood, learnt the hard way after he was caught for his acts of thievery. Cops have since solved five break-ins he was responsible for and recovered a laptop and gold necklace.

Das, who is a native of West Bengal and a fan of actor Mithun Chakraborty, loved dressing up as Chakraborty and was fond of singing and dancing. He came to Mumbai 10 years ago and worked with an orchestra before switching jobs to become a full-time burglar, said a police official from Kasturba Marg police station.

According to police sources, Das would visit buildings and societies posing as a courier boy. He would look for locked houses and then rob jewellery and other valuables from there. Using the same method, he tried to rob a flat in Powai on September 30, but was caught red handed by the Powai police. During enquiry, he confessed to two house break-ins under the jurisdiction of Jogeshwari police station. Das is also accused of burgling a cop’s home in Kandivli.

Meanwhile, the Kasturba Marg police was also on the lookout for Das, who had committed three burglaries in their jurisdiction and in one of them, had also been caught on CCTV. The Kasturba Marg police then took him into custody on October 20 have since solved the cases and recovered a laptop and gold necklace in the process.
