Mumbai crime: Gas delivery men rape woman, loot cash, jewellery

The security of women in Mumbai has again been called into question after a brutal case of rape and attempted murder at one of the most secure areas of MIDC. The two accused, identified by the police as Mohammad Shaikh (34) and Chandan Jaiswal (19), working at Bharat Gas, have been arrested for allegedly raping and robbing a 19-year old woman, in her residence at Andheri (E).

The complainant had recently shifted to Mumbai with her husband of six months and is residing in MIDC area. The husband works in a private firm and her brother-in-law stays with them. One the day of the incident, her husband left for office, leaving her alone in the house. Around 4 pm, the two accused rang her doorbell and entered her flat on the pretext of repairing the regulator. The survivor knew them as they had delivered gas cylinders to her house a couple of times, and allowed them to enter the house.

The accused made an excuse saying that the last time when they checked her gas appliances, there was a technical fault, and they had come to repair it. One of the accused, Sheikh, entered the kitchen while Jaiswal stood near the kitchen door. As soon as the woman moved towards her bedroom, Jaiswal quickly overpowered her. Sheikh tried to strangulate her as Jaiswal raped her. Sheikh then went to the bedroom and took away jewellery worth Rs 61,000 and Rs 800 cash.

Before leaving, they threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident. However, when the survivor’s husband came back from office around 8 pm, he found his wife to be unwell. When he inquired, she told him about the incident.

The couple approached the MIDC police station and filed a compliant. S Hujband, SPI of MIDC police station, informed MiD DAY, “Based on their complaint, we formed a team and approached the gas agency in Andheri and took the address and phone numbers of both the men.

We raided their residence, where they tried to flee, but we were able to catch them and produce them before court. They have been booked under various sections of IPC, including rape and robbery, and have been remanded till February 6.” In their confession, the accused revealed that they were aware that the woman was alone at home during the day and decided to take advantage of her.
