The accused (name withheld to protect victim's identity) had been living with his 15-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son at the Azadnagar slum colony in Vasai since his wife separated from him some years back, Manickpur police station sub-inspector A C Patil said.

According to the complaint filed by the girl, her father had been raping her for the past one year, Patil said. The girl also mentioned that a woman in their neighbourhood took her to an NGO, working for protection of girl child, which in-turn helped her in filing the police complaint regarding the crime.

The girl was sent for medical examination and subsequently an offence was registered yesterday against the accused who was arrested last night, the police officer said.

The accused was charged under section 376 (rape) of the IPC and sections 4 and 8 of The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, police said, adding that further probe was on in the case.
