The Kashimira police have arrested a 24-year-old for allegedly cheating people, especially women, by promising to get them jobs in various government departments. The accused, Vishwanath Patil, a resident of Diva, came in contact with the victims by creating fake Facebook accounts and posing as a woman.

The police arrested him from Kalyan station yesterday and produced him in the Vasai court, which sent him to police custody.

The first complaint
Police sources said he came on their radar after a 19-year-old girl, whose mobile phone, gold earrings and other valuables he robbed on the pretext getting her a clerical job in Thane court on September 29, lodged a complaint against him.

The victim, a resident of Bhayander, was in search of a job. She was contacted by the accused after her friend, who he had gotten in touch with for a job, directed him to her.

On September 29, the accused called her up and said he was sending his car and driver to bring her to his office in Thane. A driver came and brought the girl to Thane but asked her to hand over her phone, earrings and other valuables, saying his boss doesn’t allow anyone inside otherwise, and that she would get them back later. She gave it to him, after which he dropped her at the ST bus stand and fled.

When she tried to call up the accused, his phone was switched off. She then lodged a complaint.

The last victim
Assistant inspector Praful Wagh said, “The driver was the accused himself. After cheating the Bhayander girl, he cheated a friend of hers from Vasai four days later in the same way, robbing her phone and valuables as well. He got the contact details of several other women from the mobile phones of these two girls, and used the same modus operandi on them.”

“He was planning to cheat another with a promise of a job in a Kalyan bank. We came to know about it and approached her, and with her help succeeded in nabbing him,” he added, saying his image had been captured on a CCTV at Vasai station, which helped in nabbing him.
