Mumbai Crime: Mother sold 10-yr-old to sex racketeer for Rs 5,000
A 35-year-old woman from Pune was arrested by the police yesterday for selling her daughter, now 15, to a pimp in Malwani. Cops said the mother had traded the teenager five years ago, when she was merely 10, for an initial amount of Rs 5,000, to be followed by a monthly sum of Rs 20,000.
Other than the mother, the cops also arrested her friend, who allegedly runs a sex racket in Mumbai. The friend, identified as Salma Sheikh (42), is a Malwani resident. According to police officials, the mother-daughter duo stayed in Malwani around five years ago. At the time, the mother, a divorcee, was friends with Sheikh, and had sold the child to her for Rs 5,000.
She later shifted to Pune, where she worked at a bar, while Sheikh, the main accused, allegedly coerced the girl to get involved in prostitution. Police sources said the mother visited Mumbai every month to collect the R20,000 sum from Sheikh, as a fee for trading her daughter.
The incident came to light last week, when one of Sheikh’s regulars visited her and saw the 15-year-old girl and informed the police. Late on Tuesday night, the police sent a decoy to Sheikh’s place and, without suspecting the man, she asked him for Rs 5,000 for a night with the girl.
The cops, who were lying in wait, caught her red-handed in the middle of the deal. The following morning, they set up a trap for the mother to visit Mumbai to collect the monthly fee, and arrested her as well.
Officials said the accused sold the girl many times for Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 for a night. The two women were produced them in court yesterday, and remanded in police custody. Police sources said they hoped to bust many such cases through the investigation of this racket.
