According to the police, the accused confronted the Std VIII student while she was taking a walk in the area. Identifying himself as a policeman, he claimed to know everything about her. He said he had learnt that she was having an affair and censured her for roaming the streets alone at night.
The officer added, “Sonawane asked her whether she had watched any crime serials, in order to intimidate her. Scared, the girl started walking fast. When he started running after her, the girl ran up to her parents, and complained to them about the policeman harassing her.”
The girl’s parents noticed a police van patrolling nearby, and asked them to intervene. These cops then chased Sonawane and nabbed him. “After he was brought to the police station, the man admitted to harassing the girl and also confessed to the Tilak Nagar rape,” added the officer.
The cops said that Sonawane is unemployed, and are checking whether he committed other sexual crimes.
