A 30-year-old man who migrated to the city for work has been arrested for raping a nine-year-old girl in Sion-Chunabhatti. The accused has been identified as Anwarali Kurban Ali Mandal, and he was staying in Zaveri Bazaar at a relative’s house.

The survivor stays with her father and younger sister in Sion-Chunabhatti. Her father is a dabbawala who delivers food in Zaveri Bazaar from 11.30 am to 4 pm and 10 pm to midnight.

On the morning of December 18, when the survivor’s father was leaving to deliver the tiffins, he went to his neighbour, who melts gold for a living, and asked him to watch over his daughters. He saw two unknown men there and his neighbour told him they were his associates.

Around 1 am, when he returned from work, he found his nine-year-old sobbing. She told him that around 11 pm, before she was going to sleep, one of the two men had barged in the house, tied her up, muzzled her with his hands and raped her at knifepoint.

When the assailant took his hands off her mouth, the girl started shouting and her younger sister woke up. Hearing their shouts, their uncle in the neighbourhood went to their place but, by then, the accused had managed to run away.
“Uncle untied my hands. Then the other neighbours came over. One of them informed the police, who came and took me to the police station,” the survivor said.

Senior Police Inspector Suhas Garud, from Wadala T T police station, said, “The accused had come from Bengal to Mumbai a month ago to work. Our staff went looking for him and he was caught at his relative’s place in Zaveri Bazaar. He tried to flee but we caught him, after which he confessed to the crime. He was produced in the special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court, which remanded him in police custody till December 26.”
