Mumbai Crime: Security guard forces postwoman into lift, molests her

The Juhu police arrested a security guard from a residential building in Juhu yesterday, after a postwoman alleged that he had tried to molest and rape her. The survivor had gone to deliver a letter at Nandadeep building in Juhu on Wednesday afternoon, around 2.35 pm.

According to her statement to the police, on her way in, the security guard had rushed towards the lift, opened the door and asked her to enter. Alarmed by the guard’s insistence, the postwoman refused to enter the lift with him, even though she had to go to the seventh storey.

At this point, the accused grabbed her by the arm and waist, and dragged her into the lift. On the way up to the seventh floor, he allegedly tried to molest and rape her. When the lift’s doors finally opened on the seventh floor, he held on to her arm so she couldn’t escape. However, the survivor managed to break free and began to run down the stairs.

She stopped at the fifth floor, asked for help from one of the residents there. Together, they went to the ground floor and raised an alarm, leading to a commotion as other residents gathered there. In the meanwhile, the survivor called her colleague who was in the neighbourhood. The colleague rushed to the building and then called the police.

ACP Milind Bharambe said the cops reached the spot within 20 minutes, and immediately arrested the accused. “We have charged him under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC for now.

We are waiting for the survivor’s medical reports to come in,” said Bharambe, adding that the accused would be produced in court on Thursday.
