Sneaky recce and escape
Mishra worked as a security guard at Reliance Mall in Bandra. He spent six months planning the theft, did a recce and found the ‘secret’ door to the safe and the place where its keys were kept. He noticed that there were CCTVs all over, and decided to use an umbrella to hide under.

After the robbery, Mishra flees to his hometown in Bihar where he buys a car with his loot, spends some of it on his friends and family and deposits the rest in a bank

On July 18, with his umbrella in tow, Mishra sneaked inside the mall after it shut for the day. He got hold of the keys kept above the safe and made away with Rs 9.15 lakh in cash. On July 19, Mishra fled in a train to his native place Sonapur in Bihar.

Meanwhile in Mumbai, cops establish him as the robber while probing the case. They bait him with a job offer, which he accepts and decides to meet them at Vile Parle, where a team of cops arrests him

Cash splash
“At his native place, he bought a second-hand SUV, spent on friends and family and deposited the rest in his bank. He did it to show his relatives and others that he wasn’t poor anymore,” said a police officer.

Meanwhile, the police were scanning CCTV footage from the mall following a complaint, when they saw an unknown man walking around with an umbrella. As the probe proceeded, it was discovered that Mishra had been missing since the theft. They tried to contact him, but his phone was switched off.

The officer said, “We found another number linked to his account and left a message for him, telling him about a plum job offer. Earlier this week, he contacted an officer and said he would reach the city by Wednesday,” said the officer.

Caught at last
Senior inspector of Bandra police station Pandit Thackeray said, “On his arrival, a team reached the spot in Vile Parle and arrested him. He was produced in Bandra court and has been sent to police custody.” mid-day reached out to the mall for comment, but there was no response.
