Inspired by Bollywood super-cop films like Singham and Dabangg, a 22-year-old, with dreams of becoming a police officer, decided to move around with fake police IDs, only to get himself arrested.

The accused, identified as Pravin Bodhgutki, was arrested with a fake police ID near the Mumbai police commissioner’s office and sent to judicial custody on Wednesday. The police also found a police constable uniform, and five other fake police IDs, on his person. They are now investigating if Bodhgutki, who hails from Solapur, misused any of the fake IDs prior to his arrest. “Pravin is a fan of movies based on police officers. He is a Std 11 pass from a college in Solapur and wanted to become a police officer, but due to inadequate educational qualifications, he could not enter the police force,” said a police officer from Azad Maidan police station.

However, Bodhgutki was not one to give up. “He stole police IDs and then forged them with his pictures and his name on it. He then used these when the police caught him either at checkpoints or when he broke any traffic rules,” added the police officer.

Bodhgutki was caught when he had come to the police commissioner's officer at Crawford Market. He was sitting on the driver’s seat of a car and had parked it in the no parking zone. When a police official on traffic management duty spotted him, and asked him to move out, Bodhgutki told him that he was also a police official and the car belonged to the department.

Suspecting something amiss, Bodhgutki was asked to produce his ID card. While Bodhgutki did not hesitate to show him the card, the cop realised that it was a fake one. He was initially detained at the spot and was later handed over to the Azad Maidan police. He has been arrested under Sections 419, 465, 468, 471, 170 and 171 [for cheating and pretending to hold an office as a public servant], and further investigations are on.
