The accused Suresh Jai Thapa (30), Hemraj Naval Joshi (32), Ravindra Thapa (22), Naresh Vishwakarma (21), Netra Sahi (22), Rajesh Thapa (42) and Parekh Thapa (28) were produced before the Borivli metropolitan magistrate court, which sent all of them to police custody.

Police sources say the burglary happened in B-12 Samarth Villa. Four accused entered the bungalow, while three kept a watch outside.

Caught in the act
Neighbours knew that the owners were abroad. On seeing shadowy figures moving on the property’s first floor, where the light too was on, in the wee hours of Wednesday, they immediately called up the PCR.

Night duty detection officer Assistant Inspector MD Dorkar and his team reached the spot and nabbed the accused as they were loading their haul inside the owner’s Mahindra XUV. One accused almost managed to escape but was caught by the locals and handed over to the police.

“The accused only succeeded in getting their hands on a bluetooth speaker worth Rs 10,000 and were trying to flee in the bungalow owner’s Mahindra XUV when our team reached there,” said an officer.

Meet the mastermind
While bungalow owner Deena Saroj Balani lives there with her husband, the rest of the family, including their son, are in the US. The couple had left for the US 20 days ago. Suresh, who worked as a watchman at the bungalow hatched the robbery plan, roping in others.

Ravindra and Joshi both worked as watchmen in the same locality, while the other four did the same job in other parts of the city. Dorkar said Vishwakarma and Sahi have criminal records, with the former arrested by the Dombivli police in 2015 in a robbery case and the latter by the Koparkhairane cops. Sahi had been released just a month and a half back.

“As per complaint of Sagar Parekh, Balani’s nephew, we have registered an FIR under IPC sections 457 (house-breaking by night), 379 (theft), 380 (theft in dwelling house) and 34 (common intention) and arrested all accused,” he added.
