The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Friday Dossier

Lower Parel gets one too
While we were upset about the shuttering of Blue Frog in Lower Parel’s Mathuradas Mills Compound, the gloom was quelled when we heard that another favourite — Woodside Inn — will be opening an outlet in the same neighbourhood come September. The gastro bar already has outposts in Colaba and Andheri, both serving a delightful menu of burgers, beer and everything in between. The latest one, we hear, will have new menu additions. We can’t wait!

TBK on BBC
The Kapadia’s of The Bohri Kitchen are well on their way to being recognized as the first family of food in Mumbai. Starting out with a small pop-up at their Colaba home, their dishes have been served in restaurants, they’ve been featured in magazines, newspapers and blogs, and have appeared on a couple of food shows.

Today, at 8 pm, they will appear on BBC News as part of a show called Global Pulse. They will share screen space with a Buddhist nun who runs a cooking school at a temple in Seoul, a Michelin-starred chef in London and the oldest restaurant in Dubai. Chief Eating Officer, as he likes to be called, Munaf Kapadia calls it their ‘biggest break yet’ and a chance for them to go global.

As the story goes, TV crew members, Vlad Jakovlev and Ieva Ludviga, visited TBK for a short shoot but ended up staying for three days. “They put up Go Pro cameras above the thaal to give viewers a 360% degree viewing experience and accompanied my dad to Colaba market and filmed him buying vegetables,” says Kapadia. At the end, they parted as friends. Ieva, we’re told, being vegetarian couldn’t eat the thaal but wanted to be part of the experience so tucked into roti and chutney.

Ants in your pants, Sushant?

Sushant Singh Rajput seems to be in some serious trouble going by his actions and facial expressions at the release of a trailer of a film based on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s life, as Captain Cool lives up to his tag, quite clearly.

Serendipity festival in Goa
If you needed another reason to head to Goa in December, try the Serendipity Arts Festival. The first edition of the interdisciplinary arts festival, to be held from December 16 to 23 wants to promote value for performing, visual, and culinary arts.

Panjim will host the fest, and we hear that most events will be by the waterfront. The indoor and outdoor venues, like most places in Goa, will be walking distance from each other. The curatorial panel features cultural historian Jyotindra Jain, Dinesh Khanna, co-founder of the Delhi Photo Festival, poet Ranjit Hoskote, drummer Ranjit Barot, actor Lillete Dubey and Goa’s food columnist and historian, Odette Mascarenhas.

Most events will be free. Watch out for a classical music performance that is a throwback to the 1900s and artwork from 24 artists from South Asia. And if you like clicking selfies, participate in the open call for The Selfie Project on Instagram that will end up as an installation at the event.

Unleash the soul of India
Soul of India, a dance drama show was held at St Andrew’s in Bandra yesterday.

The theatrical performance was created by MAD Dance Company that presented an extravagant showcase of India’s past legends using colourful costumes and a vibrant soundtrack. The idea, according to Harshall Kamat, its director and founder, was to present a glimpse of India by celebrating its past, present and future.

How to get booked!
Today is World Librarian Day, and what better way to celebrate it than to tell you how to get the best deals on books. Though the value of a book shouldn’t be judged by money but there is no harm in bagging it at a lower price.

No, we aren’t talking about an upcoming book sale, but of an open group on Facebook, Book Deals for Broke Bibliophiles that helps people find the best deals on books on e-commerce websites. With over 17,000 members spread across India, the group is growing, thanks to its administrator, who scourges through the net to find the best deals on e-commerce websites and shares it in the group.

There’s more food news. Group members have lately started Broke Bibliophile book clubs in cities across in their cities including Mumbai, where they meet and talk about books. If you haven’t read one in a long time thanks to your hectic schedules or high prices, perhaps visiting the group might be a good idea.
