The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Friday Dossier

Let's hoove to the music
After a sedate musical evening by specialist doctors who crooned select Bollywood golden oldies, the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) changes tracks for a different musical experience at its Pune races this Sunday.

The video and audio one-stop shop named Sound Factor will bring the Sound Factor Videotheque to the members’ lounge of the Pune racecourse. The Sound Factor installs large screens with the best audio, bringing musical concerts to life. It’s the brainchild of Milind Mehta and Marzban Irani, audiophiles.

They say they are driven by a passion for music, gadgets and technology. The AV experience is to play out at the lounge between 1 and 5 pm. Punters, don’t just bring along your binoculars. Reach for those earmuffs too.

Sushant's got the moves

Sushant Singh Rajput seemed to be having a blast with a mascot at the trailer launch of his upcoming film held last evening.

Dancing for Ashatai
As evergreen singing legend Asha Bhosle celebrated her 83rd birthday yesterday, Bollywood and India came out in full support to share their anecdotes about the songstress. Terence Lewis, who performed along with actress Radhika Apte at last night’s big bash for Bhosle was ecstatic with the honour.

“Ashaji has a huge repertoire and when I were asked to perform with Radhika Apte, I wondered why? The organisers told us that Ashaji selected you (Lewis) and Radhika, and that she wanted both of us to do a very sensuous number. We did songs from the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s.

We did a mix of Bolly salsa and bachata. I liked the experience of dancing with Radhika. She’s fabulous, and is a trained dancer. She’s got an amazing sense of rhythm and flexibility.” Now, that’s what we call a dancing tribute to a singing icon.

Potter in pics
Is your 10-year-old reading the second Harry Potter book and wondering what the impish house-elf Dobby looks like? Instead of watching the movie, we suggest you wait till October 4 to buy the full-colour illustrated edition of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets (Bloomsbury).

It features scenes, dark themes and unforgettable characters (remember the haughty Gilderoy Lockhart!) illustrated by Jim Kay. We loved the illustration of a phoenix, where even the differences between a male and a female were highlighted. The countdown begins!

Art finds a new canvas
Our photographer captured this scene of workers applying finishing touches to the staircase leading to Mount Mary church in Bandra.

The birthday of Mother Mary was observed yesterday with much piety and enthusiasm across city churches as devotees thronged the popular place of worship. The annual Mount Mary fest will begin this Sunday and is expected to draw in lakhs of visitors for the week-long celebration.

Well, heeled
After offering financial solutions to rural entrepreneurs, predominantly women clients, through her first start-up, Svatantra Microfinance, Ananya Birla is ready to cater to the high-heeled.

Yesterday, the third-generation scion of the Birla family launched a global, luxury ecommerce platform, CuroCarte, which will offer close to 1,500 artisanal, handcrafted lifestyle products, curated from nine countries. They have also tied up with a famed global lab that tests every product before production.

While guests at the launch were wowed by a VR video on the journey of these products and the story behind the start-up, Birla’s spiked heels, a Gucci pair, caught the eye. And if so eclectic is the lady’s taste in shoes, we can hardly wait for two more days, till the site goes live, to figure what’s in store (literally) for us to pick from.
