Rai runs in China
It is a global village out there and marathon runners epitomise that reality, crossing borders to run marathons across countries. Darjeeling native and Mumbai resident Roshni Rai, is currently in China to run the Xinguyi Marathon, invited by Nepal’s Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon & China Mountaineering Association, Rai is a famous face on the city’s marathon circuit.

Roshni has an organisation called, ‘Run with Roshni’. Her foundation has a two-pronged aim. Roshni wants to produce international level long distance Gorkha runners and break stereotypes and misconceptions about people from the North East. Today, though it is time for her to put her best foot forward in China.

Roshni said before boarding the flight, “This opportunity makes me feel like a daughter of the mountains in the real sense of the term.” Meanwhile, we are amused that this ‘daughter of the mountains’ has a sense of humour too.

Rai’s WhatsApp status has a picture of her with Milind Soman, Mumbai’s poster boy of marathons. In the frame, she looks taller than Milind, which she is actually not, in real life. Her status says: ‘Taller and Prettier. Confirmed by Milind Soman.’ That’s called putting smiles into marathon miles.

Ladies Special
They are powerful women and role models in their own right. This December, actresses Gul Panag and Shruti Seth, want to highlight other inspirational women. They will be curating a two-day cultural festival, Festivelle, women-based festival by women, for women.

“We want it to be a space where ideas can be exchanged. We will bring together everything we feel can entertain, educate and empower women,” says Seth. Subjects will cover everything from entrepreneurship to mommy woes.

Expect workshops, comedy gigs, food, music, and lots of retail therapy. The duo wants you to attend the festival with your mothers; female relatives and girlfriends, giving them all a two-day break from their daily rut. “The whole idea is to give you an environment where you can come in participate in events or workshops or just sit under a tree and read a book and soak in the energy,” adds Seth. Plans are on to take this across India.

For a few good men
The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) is going to play its part in contributing to the Army Welfare Fund, for the families of those martyred at Uri in Jammu & Kashmir recently. A contribution of about Rs 5 lakh from the club’s Charities’ Fund will be made to the Army Commander, Southern Command, on its Army Day races this Sunday in Pune.

The racecourse land has been made available to RWITC by the Defence Ministry on a long-term lease. The Army Day races are a manifestation of the close rapport between the Army and the RWITC. We snap a salute to anything that pays respect to the Indian soldier. Those men who make the ultimate sacrifice and because of whom we live to write snippets like these.

We are feeling particularly smug while writing this one because among the winners is Jagran Group president Apurva Purohit, who received the trophy from Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani.

The group publishes mid-day, Dainik Jagran, Naiduniya, I-Next, and hosts FM channel Radio City. Other winners at yesterday’s awards included Dr Mariazeena Johnson of Sathyabama University and designer Anita Dongre (left, in pic).
