The city - sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Tuesday Dossier

Lifetime honour
One cannot think of luminaries of English writing in India and not think of Amitav Ghosh. The author of widely acclaimed works like the Ibis Trilogy takes the reader through the passage of time to fantastic stories of another time. Now, Mumbai's own upcoming literature festival will confer its Lifetime Achievement Award on Amitav Ghosh.

The previous recipients of this award included Kiran Nagarkar, MT Vasudevan Nair, Khushwant Singh, Sir VS Naipaul and Mahasweta Devi. "It is a privilege to be included in a list of such distinguished honourees," said Ghosh. Watch this space for more buzz when Mr Ghosh is in town.

Lights will guide you home
Last weekend, if you had passed by Sir JJ College of Architecture, you might have seen its walls played with colourful lights. In red, yellow and green, the light fixtures, positioned at strategic angles, showcased the walls' textures, lit up the existing sculptures and also, enhanced the shadows in certain parts.

The concepts and design was courtesy the work of 110 students from various architectural colleges in the city, who were part of a two-day workshop on lighting design organised by the Indian branch of the US-based non-profit International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD).

"The workshop aimed to provide a platform for ideas and innovations on lighting design, (green) energy efficiency concepts, and the quality of night time environments in our cities and towns," says Dr Amardeep Dugar, who organised the event.

Going, going, gone...molecular
Gaurish Rangnekar, owner of the legendary The Den in Bandra, is a mixologist with a penchant for creating cocktails using everything from bacon to Indian spices. He recently visited London for a special advanced mixology course by the Night Jar (known to be one of the best bars in the world). This masterclass focused on spherification, foams, aers, dry ice and other intricacies of molecular mixology.

This, we hear, was training for his upcoming gastrobar in Todi Mills, which will focus on craft cocktails, gourmet tapas, and boozy bar snacks. Look out for a cocktail made from Sonpapdi, Halwa or even mushrooms!

#rallyfashion, anyone?
We like when tough-as-nails TV presswallahs take a detour from their serious day jobs avatar and show a bit of their lighter side.

And where better than social media to flaunt their humour. Known for her candid, easygoing reportage style, Delhi-based Sunetra Choudhury's take on netajis and their fashion sense while at a political rally made us chuckle at the hatke side of Indian political reporting.

She tweeted: Ok I can safely say that netas are flaunting the very latest asymmetrical kurta. We'd love to see more of such politically fashionable jhalaks from our otherwise predictable telly junta.

A jazzier event
International Pop star Demi Lovato has confirmed that she will be joining Coldplay and JayZ at the Global Citizen Festival India, to be held in Mumbai on November 19. The post she shared on social media yesterday read, "November 19th | Mumbai | Change begins with me #ShuruaatHoonMain."

The sensation is a Global Citizen herself, and was part of the New York edition of the festival earlier this year. If you've managed to snag a ticket to the much-hyped event, you will be able to sing along to her hit single Confident in less than two weeks from now.
