Fast bowlers along with spin bowlers and batsman got together at the MIG Cricket Club, Bandra (East) to mark 20 years of the now defunct Bombay Cricket Association-Mafatlal Scheme for Bowlers.

The scheme spearheaded by former England pace terror Frank Tyson brought about a revival in Mumbai cricket because it produced the kind of fast bowlers the city lacked.u00a0 It also helped Mumbai regain the Ranji Trophy after eight barren seasons. If Mumbai has dominated the national championship in the 1990s, this scheme has to be hailed because it produced fast bowlers like Abey Kuruvilla, Paras Mhambrey and fast-tracked the revival of Salil Ankola.

Apart from fast bowlers, batsmen like Amol Muzumdar and Hrishikesh Kanitkar were beneficiaries just like spinners Sairaj Bahutule and Nilesh Kulkarni. In a message from Australia where he is now based, Tyson wrote: "Having been present at the birth of the scheme and seen it develop so well over the years it would have been my pleasure to have been present at this 20th year anniversary. Although I am not present in person, I wish the scheme continued success."

Ravi Shastri, under whom Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy after eight seasons in 1993-94, said in a message: "It's their job now to pass on to the younger generation."
