A pizza is always a good idea. A breakfast pizza with Prosciutto, cherry tomatoes, cheese and gooey eggs fried sunny side up is an even better one.

At Farmer & Sons, Fort, they know the value of a good pizza. "Our speciality here is pizza, so how can we introduce a new menu without it, even if it meant creating a breakfast pizza," says chef and owner Nico Goghavala. The Breakfast Pizza (R650) is clearly the star of the Horniman Circle eatery's new breakfast menu.

It has a thick crust and is redolent with Prosciutto, mushrooms, cheese (mozzarella and parmesan), spinach and cherry tomatoes. In the centre are two fried eggs. Cut into it, and every mouthful is a burst of flavour, and a gooey mess of melted cheese, runny yolk and salty ham.

Farmer & Sons' new menu will be available starting today, which means the place is now open for breakfast. Diners can choose from Wholewheat or Carrot Pancakes, Poached Eggs or a Savory Morning Bowl with kale, figs, cucumber and boiled eggs.

We drop in for an exclusive taster before the launch to find the kitchen busy putting in final touches to the menu. To give them time, we start off with drinks, which are available from the regular menu. "We realised that these few drinks worked better with our lunch customers as they were healthy and filling. Since people tend to eat healthy at breakfast or brunch because they like to start the day right," says chef Ajinkya More.

Rose Tinted (R150) is a vibrant red drink served in a small bottle — the combination of beetroot and mint adds a fresh, wholesome feel, with the lemon giving it the right kick. The Citizen Kane (R150) is no mystery but we love the drink nevertheless.

It has a sweetness from the sugar, cane juice and coconut water that counters the sharpness from the ginger. As a whole, the drink works really well and we finish every last drop. There's nothing scandalous about Hot and Steamy (R150), a soothing concoction of ginger, lime and turmeric. It is something we would love when down with a sore throat or in need of warmth.

The Housemade Muesli and Organic Milk (Rs 325) wins our vote for the healthiest item on the menu. The bowl of muesli has everything we can think of — oats, coconut flakes, roasted almonds, dry amla, dry berries, chia and flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, almond and walnuts. It is crunchy and sweet and extremely filling. The milk is not needed; we could eat a jar of the muesli by itself and bask in the virtue of having eaten something wholesome.

The Buttermilk Waffles (R175) are light and airy but a bit dry; they come accompanied by a crème fraîche and maple syrup. The Frittata Gardenia skillet baked Omelette (R275) is creamy but the eggs and cheese overpower the taste of the vegetables (potato, zucchini and squash) in it. The Liquid Sunshine (R225) is an opaque, flavourful broth with a perfectly poached egg — it is power packed with flavour.

The menu also has a daily bread basket with homemade breads and whole wheat muffins. The Banana Bread (R200) is sweet and crumbly but dry; the Lemon and Poppy Seed Bread (R200) is slightly bitter; the Strawberry Banana Oatmeal Muffin (R150) has cranberries instead of strawberries. The pick of the basket is the Carrot, Walnut, Honey Muffins (R200) which is crumbly, soft and not too sweet.

The breakfast menu, on the whole, has variety, seasonal produce and delicious drinks. We are told that about 99 per cent of what is served is made in-house. There are plans to also start a Sunday brunch.

Till that happens, we will return for more of that Breakfast Pizza.
