While most sandwich and chaat stalls offer options you can count on your fingertips, Sadguru Sandwich Centre, located opposite the main entrance of Pawan Hans in Vile Parle (W), has a delicious 111 varieties.

These are highlighted on a huge A3-size laminated menu. The offerings include everything from the modest Masala Toast, grilled options with tandoori-spiced mayonnaise, schezwan, paneer and cheese to Jain sandwiches and hybrids like Samosa and Chocolate Toasts.

However, what catches our fancy are the unheard of dishes — Golden Bhel Toast (Rs. 60) and Sev Puri Cheese Toast (Rs. 60). These varieties aren’t even available at the centre’s branch in Vakola. “That is owned by my brother but we have more varieties here. We first try the experiments ourselves. If we like them, then it goes on the menu,” says Mahindra Gupta, the owner of the 20-year-old stall.

Gupta is stationed under a cloth umbrella that covers the table. He crushes puris into a container with chopped onion, tomatoes, chutney, sev and crispy, fried dal instead of puffed rice. This mix is stuffed between two slices of bread and then toasted. That’s the Golden Bhel Toast for you. Our mouth explodes with a medley of deliciously spicy, tangy and sweet flavours, paired with the comfort of familiar textures of buttered, toasted bread. The chopped vegetables work better than the thick cut slices we’ve had in regular potato masala varieties.

Meanwhile, a thick layer of melted cheese adds the required saltiness to the savoury-sweet flavoured Sev Puri Cheese Toast, which get an interesting texture from soft crispy puris. We leave the stall just as a bunch of students from nearby Nanavati college drop in to place an order of Grilled Sandwich With Tandoori Mayonnaise. We make a mental note to try it on our next visit.
