Mumbai gets its liege waffles right

Wafflist, a quaint little waffle place tucked away between many popular eateries on Carter Road, is looking to redefine this breakfast delicacy

Mumbai gets its liege waffles right

Nutty Buddy

Although there are a number of eateries in the city that offer waffles, barring one or two, a waffle-only place is something of a rarity in Mumbai. So it was with a lot of anticipation that we stepped into Wafflist, the new eatery in Khar on a sweltering Monday afternoon to be greeted by bright orange-and-white colour interiors that instantly lifted our spirits.

Like many before in the queue before us, we began with the Nutty Buddy (Rs 150), which had nutella cream slathered over a heap of freshly sliced bananas. And as expected, the combination of nutella and bananas did not disappoint us. The crispness of the waffle along with the soft bananas left us yearning for more.

Next up was the Cookie Rookie (Rs 130), which had the liège waffle (Belgian waffles) smothered with a generous dollop of oreo cookie cream. The trio of whipped cream, oreo cream and oreo biscuits may sound like an overdose but in the end, they complemented each other well. The only glitch being that the oreo cream was a bit too sweet for our liking.

Our trip to waffle land ended with The XOXO (Rs 150). Slightly sour strawberries offered the perfect counterpart to the rich chocolate in this waffle. While we had no complaints regarding the food, the only grouse was that the portions could have been bigger. The lack of seating, too, was a slight turn-off, although space constraint isn’t new to Mumbaikars.

To take our mind off such worries, we decided to try out some of the shakes and chocolate shots that the eatery offers as add ons.

The Kitkat Thick Shake (Rs 160) was predictably yummy, and will definitely hit the right spot if you like the chocolate. We loved the fact that the shake was chilled and thick. The same could be said for the Strawberry and White Chocolate milkshake (Rs 130). Predictability aside, the respite was the fact that neither of the two drinks was too sweet and we could taste the flavours.

The out and out winner was the Chocolate Chili Shot (Rs 30). It came in a small shotglass and just like any other shot, we had to gulp it down in one go. The sweet and chilli flavours hit us and left an interesting aftertaste in our mouth.

All in all, Wafflist isn’t startlingly impressive but is worth a try.
